Wiartel – The Pearl of the Piska Forest: history and modernity of the Masurian village
Wiartel is a picturesque village located in the heart of Masuria, on the shores of Lake Wiartel, surrounded by the dense Pisz Forest. Rich in history and natural beauty, this place attracts both nature lovers and enthusiasts of the region’s fascinating past. Discover Wiartel’s captivating history and find out what makes it the perfect destination for a luxurious getaway at SPA Złota Łania Resort.
The History of Wiartel: From Industry to Tourism
16th–18th Centuries: The Beginnings of the Metallurgical Industry
The history of Wiartel dates back to the 16th century, when an ironworks operated in the village. It remained in operation until 1725, when it closed due to a lack of raw materials. This was a significant period in the development of the village, influencing its later position in the region.
Early 20th Century: The Rise of Tourism
At the beginning of the 20th century, Wiartel began attracting tourists seeking peace and the beauty of the Masurian landscapes. The “Wiartel” guest house was established here, serving as a holiday and leisure centre. In addition, Konopacki’s inn offered not only excellent cuisine but also rooms for rent. The village became an important destination on the tourist map of Masuria.
Melchior Wańkowicz and "Na Tropach Smętka"
Wiartel gained literary fame thanks to Melchior Wańkowicz, who described the village in his book “Na tropach Smętka”. Travelling through the former Masuria, the author captured the unique atmosphere and character of this place, further increasing its popularity.
The Interwar Period: The Henrich Kirsch Distillery
During the interwar period, Wiartel was known for the Henrich Kirsch distillery, which produced liqueurs famous throughout the area, including the celebrated “Kosakencaffe” (Cossack Coffee). These products were appreciated by both residents and visitors, contributing to the village’s economic prosperity.
The Post-War Years: Turbulent Times and the Development of the Fur Industry
After the Second World War, Wiartel became the site of important historical events. In 1946, a group of 60 members of the independence underground attacked the local Citizens’ Militia station, reflecting the tense political situation of those years. Forest district manager Neugebauer was killed in the shootout.
During the communist era, the village turned back towards industry. From 1958 until the beginning of the 1990s, a fur farm operated here, raising mink, blue foxes and European beavers. Furs from Wiartel were valued for their high quality, and the farm became one of the region’s most important facilities of its kind. However, an American mink once escaped from the farm and disrupted the surrounding forest ecosystem.
